Madagascar Announces National Energy Emergency Amid Mideast Conflict
Authorities said widespread shortages of fuel have impacted the entire island, prompting the government to adopt immediate steps aimed at stabilizing energy access and maintaining essential public services.
In an official statement, the Cabinet explained, "The declaration of a state of energy emergency allows authorities to take exceptional and urgent measures to restore energy supply and ensure continuity of public services. The decision was taken following the observation that the country is facing a deep crisis due to disruptions in energy supply across the island linked to the conflict in the Middle East."
According to reports, several African nations have responded to rising global oil prices—driven by the US-Israeli war involving Iran—by introducing measures to ease the burden. These steps have included suspending taxes on fuel imports and adjusting levies to limit the economic impact.
Nearby countries have taken similar actions. Zambia, for instance, eliminated Value Added Tax and temporarily halted excise duties on petrol and diesel imports for a three-month period starting April 1. Meanwhile, Botswana previously suspended both road and fuel levies for six months in an effort to shield consumers from escalating fuel costs.
